Spitakavor Monastery is an Armenian monastery, 7 km north of the village of Vernashen in Vayots Dzor Province, Armenia. The area is divided by deep gorges, and on top of the nearest mountain stand Proshaberd Fortress, also known as Boloraberd.
The monastery complex has a church, a porch, a bell tower, and strong stone walls. The Church of Surb Astvatsatsin, also called Surb Karapet in old records, was started by Prince Eachi Proshyan. After he died in 1318, his son Amir Hasan II finished it in 1321. The church was built with smooth white stone, which is why it was called “Spitak,” meaning “white” in Armenian. The small church building is topped with a tall drum and a slender conical roof.
Spitakavor was one of the most important places for culture, learning, and religion in Vayots Dzor. It stayed active in the second half of the 15th century and survived attacks by Tatar-Mongol forces. When the university in Gladzor closed in the 1340s, Spitakavor became the main centre for education and manuscript writing for the Proshyan family. It grew in importance in the late 15th century under abbot Avagter, and some of his manuscripts still exist today.
The grave of the military and political leader Garegin Nzhdeh is at Spitakavor. His tombstone was placed there on 17 June 1989.
Boloraberd, also called Proshaberd, is one of the most famous medieval fortresses in Vayots Dzor Province. It was built in the 13th century on a high hill near the village of Vernashen and was the residence of Prince Prosh Khaghbakyan.
Proshaberd had strong basalt walls for protection and a water system, with pipes that can still be seen today. Some of the walls and towers are still standing. The inside parts of the fortress—like the defensive buildings, armoury, barracks, and the Princely Palace of the Proshians—were destroyed and are now covered by a thick layer of earth.
