Mount Aragats is an extinct volcano with four peaks, and it’s the highest mountain in Armenia and the whole South Caucasus. Its tallest peak rises to 4,090 metres above sea level. The mountain is very old – around 60 million years.
Aragats is a popular destination for both experienced climbers and people who enjoy mountain walks. Each of its four peaks has a different level of difficulty. The Northern (4,090 m), Western (4,000 m), and Eastern (3,916 m) peaks are more difficult and are best for skilled hikers. The Southern peak, at 3,879 metres, is the easiest to reach and is a great option for those looking for a more relaxed and rewarding hike.
The hike to the Southern peak begins at Lake Kari – a beautiful high mountain lake on the slopes of Mount Aragats. In winter, the lake is mostly covered with snow and ice. It is located at 3,207 metres above sea level, on a wide plateau below the mountain peaks.
Lake Kari was formed by ice moving down the mountain long ago. It has a shoreline of about 1,150 metres, covers an area of 30 hectares, the volume is 357,000 m³, and reaches a maximum depth of 8 metres. A paved road leads to the lake from the village of Byurakan. There is a Weather station on the eastern shore of the lake.
