Haghartsin Monastery

Haghartsin Monastery

The hike will start at Haghartsin Monastery. After visiting the monastery, we will walk through the forest to the Hidden Waterfall (about 1.5 km). After that, we will continue with the main part of the hike – climbing Mount Dimats.

Haghartsin is an old Armenian monastery in the Tavush region, 18 km from the town of Dilijan. It is in a forested valley in the Ijevan mountains. The monastery was built between the 10th and 13th centuries, mostly with the help of the Bagratuni dynasty, who ruled Armenia at that time.

The Church of Surb Grigor, with its eight-sided dome base, was built in the 10th century. It is the oldest building in the monastery.

The main church, St. Holy Mother of God (Surb Astvatsatsin), was restored in 1281. In the 12th–13th centuries, a gavit (entrance hall) was added to it.

The 16-sided dome is decorated with fine stone carvings. The columns do not stand directly on the roof edge, but on top of small decorated triangles. This makes the dome and decorations look lighter and more elegant.

Hidden Waterfall

Hidden Waterfall

The Hidden Waterfall is a small waterfall in Dilijan National Park. It is a beautiful place in the forest, where you can enjoy both nature and the sound of falling water.

The noise of the water and the green forest around it create a peaceful and refreshing atmosphere. Forest waterfalls also help the environment by giving water to local plants and animals. The water is full of oxygen, which is important for many living things.
