Mount Sevkar

Hike to Mount Sevkar
Hike to the top of Mount Sevkar

Mount Sevkar is an extinct volcano in Gegharkunik Province, Armenia, and part of the Vardenis Mountains. Its name means “black stone” in Armenian, because of the dark volcanic rocks found on its slopes.

The hike starts in the village of Nshkhark and leads to the top of Mount Sevkar. From the summit, you’ll enjoy beautiful views of Lake Sevan, Mount Armaghan, the Vardenis Mountains, and the town of Martuni.

After reaching the top, we’ll head down the northern slope to the Sevsar Observatory – an ancient complex with rock carvings (petroglyphs) connected to the stars and planets.

Sevsar Observatory (Petroglyphs)

Sevsar Petroglyphs
Petroglyphs – a stone slab measuring 3 × 2 meters, engraved with various symbols, numerous figures of celestial bodies, and constellations using a metal chisel.

The main feature of the site is a large stone slab, about 3 by 2 metres, covered with carved symbols, star shapes, and constellations. In the lower right corner, there is a circle 90 cm wide, with a smaller circle and a spiral inside it.

Lines spread out from the circle like sun rays. In the centre, there is a deep hole where a stick could be placed. As the sun moves, the shadow of the stick follows the lines to show the time. This suggests the carving was used as a sundial over 4,000 years ago.

The hike ends on the slopes of Mount Gandzakar, where many ancient remains can still be seen.

Armenia is a country to fall in love with!
