Azhdahak is an extinct volcano and the highest peak in the Geghama mountain range, standing at 3,597 metres above sea level. At the top, there is a crater filled with water. From the summit, you can enjoy breathtaking views of Mount Ararat, Mount Hatis, Mount Arailer, Mount Aragats, Lake Sevan, and the surrounding slopes of the Geghama mountains. In Armenian mythology, Azhdahak is a dragon-like man (called a vishap), and many legends are connected to him.
The trip begins in the village of Goght. From there, we take a 4x4 vehicle up the slopes of Mount Paytasar. On the way, we stop at several interesting places. One stop is at Lake Vank, where you can see ancient Vishapakars – also known as “dragon stones.” Vishapakars are believed to be the ancestors of khachkars (cross-stones). Both are spiritual stone monuments. You can see similar designs on khachkars that originally came from Vishapakars. We will also stop to see many prehistoric petroglyphs – ancient carvings on rocks.
The hike begins at the foot of Mount Paytasar. We will walk through alpine landscapes and climb to the top of Mount Karmir Katar (“Red Peak” – 3,530 metres). From there, we continue our journey to Mount Azhdahak.
After a short rest, we return to the vehicle and go back to the starting point – the village of Goght.
