Gutanasar is a volcanic mountain located in the Kotayk Province, in Armenia. The volcano is part of the Geghama mountain range and rises to 2299 meters above sea level. The name “Gutanasar” was given to the mountain because of its northern slope, the folds of which resemble plow marks. In the Armenian language, gutan means “plow (plough)”.
The Black Wall, or the collapsed lava of Gutanasar, is located at the foot of Mount Gutanasar, 3 km from the village of Fantan. Its striking and unusual colours captivate visitors. Black Wall is a popular spot for photographers and nature lovers.
We will begin our hike in Fantan and walk to the Black Wall. After taking beautiful photos and having a short rest, we will hike up Mount Gutanasar. As we climb the volcano, we’ll enjoy amazing views of Mounts Ararat, Mount Hatis, Mount Ara, and Mount Aragats, as well as the Geghama and Tsaghkunyats mountain ranges, and even the capital city of Armenia, Yerevan.
After a peaceful rest at the summit, we’ll take a different path down the northern slope and return to Fantan.
This hike is gentle and perfect for beginners who want a mix of natural beauty, light adventure, and great views.
