The dominant feature here is a stone slab measuring 3 by 2 metres, on which various symbols and numerous depictions of celestial bodies and constellations are engraved. In the lower right corner of the slab is a carved circle 90 cm in diameter, containing a smaller circle and a spiral.
From this circle, many ray-like grooves extend outward. The hollow at the centre of the circle is believed to have had a special purpose. If a vertical rod were placed in this hollow, its shadow moving along the carved rays could mark the time. This means the petroglyph is actually an ancient sun dial, estimated to be more than 4,000 years old.
Mount Armaghan is located in Armenia’s Gegharkunik Province. Rising to 2,829 metres above sea level, it is an extinct volcano. At the summit lies a small mountain lake, about 50 metres wide and 15 metres deep, partially filling a volcanic crater. The lake is surrounded by alpine vegetation.
The Church of St Hovhannes also stands at the top. Built in 2009, it was constructed on the site of an older chapel.
There is a beautiful local tradition connected with Armaghan. According to legend, heavenly fairies sometimes descend to drink from the lake. When they do, the mountain is covered in mist so that no one can see them, adding a touch of magic to this stunning place.
