Azhdahak is an extinct volcano and the highest peak in the Geghama mountain range, standing at 3,597 metres above sea level. At the summit, there is a crater filled with water. From the top, you can enjoy stunning panoramic views of Mount Ararat, Mount Hatis, Mount Arailer, Mount Aragats, Lake Sevan, and the slopes of the Geghama mountains. In Armenian mythology, Azhdahak is a man-dragon (vishap), a legendary creature known from many ancient stories.
The tour begins in the village of Goght. From there, a 4WD vehicle takes you up the slopes of Mount Paytasar. Along the way, you’ll make several stops. One is at Lake Vank, where you can see ancient dragon stones, known as vishapakars. These are considered the ancestors of khachkars (cross-stones). Both are spiritual stone monuments, and you’ll notice similar patterns on khachkars that first appeared on vishapakars. Another stop is at a site filled with prehistoric petroglyphs.
At the foot of Mount Azhdahak, the hike to the summit begins. It takes about two hours and rewards you with incredible views. If you like, you can also go down into the crater to visit the lake – and even take a dip in its icy water.
