Day 2 - Yerevan - Garni - Havuts Tar - Geghard - Sevan

Walking tour to Havuts Tar monastery complex
trip to the pagan temple of Garni
Lake Sevan

Breakfast in the hotel

The day starts with a trip to the pagan temple of Garni. Garni Temple built in the 1st century by the Armenian King Tiridates I and dedicated to the God of the Sun Areg (Mihr). The temple is at the edge of a triangular cliff, which overlooks the ravine of the Azat River and the Gegham mountains.

Walking tour to Havuts Tar monastery complex. The Havuts Tar monastery complex is located to the east of Garni on the left bank of the Azat River and was one of the major religious and cultural centres of medieval Armenia. This formidable 11th century walled monastery stands half ruined on an outcrop across the Garni River gorge from the village of Goght. The bulk of the monastic complex is 12-14th c., rebuilt in the early 18th c. by the Katholikos Astvatsatur after being ruined in the great 1679 earthquake. The walled enclosure preserves a rich trove of inscriptions and carvings from earlier times, as well as vaulted guest rooms.

On the way we will see the natural monument "Symphony of stones". The canyon is composed of regular hexagonal prisms. Near its end, the gorge's beautiful formation has prompted the name "Symphony of Stones" or "Basalt Organ". If you look at the gorge from a distance, the rocks seem like a giant organ. An amazing strangeness of basalt columns’ regular forms catches the eye and causes delight. Practically perfect columns look as if they were specially carved by a human hand, and not by nature itself.

Lunch + masterclass of baking lavash in tandoor

Next stop is Geghard monastery complex (IV century), which is included in the list of World Cultural Heritage by the UNESCO. Its full name is Geghardavank, literally it is translated as "Monastery of the spear". The name of the monastery complex comes from Christ Spear (Spear of Longinus), which the Roman soldier Longinus thrust in Jesus Christ. The spear is now kept in the treasury of Echmiadzin Cathedral.

We continue the tour to the pearl of Armenia - blue Sevan. Lake Sevan is a freshwater lake in the Armenian highlands. It is the largest lake in the Caucasus.
